First, all my students were asked if they knew who Mother Teresa is and what they already knew about her.
The low literacy students were given reading material on Mother Teresa's life and they were asked to match the passages to the posters. Then they had to retell her story with the pictures as an aid. They were asked to go on computer to select information about Mother Teresa and quote the information and reference it. Students were asked to point out the differences between a story and an information text/ biography. The purpose of a story is to entertain and the purpose of a biography is to inform us of the key events in a persons life.
Year 11 students were asked to read an information text and a story about Mother Teresa and identify features of the two different text types. Students were asked to choose which text was descriptive and which was analytical. They brainstormed the qualities of a good person and were asked to write on the topic, "What makes Mother Teresa a good person?"
All my students work on Mother Teresa was placed on the bulletin board. Students were asked to read and comment on each other's findings.
This lesson took about two weeks and it involved students from Year 10 and 11. They seemed to enjoy learning about her and were quite amazed by what she accomplished and her reasons for her work.
